Hauts Grades Academy
One of the themes that runs throughout GEMS+H is that curiosity begins every journey.

The Hauts Grades Academy represents that philosophy within Freemasonry. Developed by the Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, the Academy challenges members to move beyond simply receiving degrees and instead study them deeply—asking questions, researching symbolism, reflecting on their meaning, and applying those lessons to everyday life.

I began that journey in January 2021 when I was accepted into Level I of the Academy. During the following year, I worked through all twenty-nine Scottish Rite degrees, studying each one to better understand the lessons they teach and the connections they share. I completed Level I in January 2022.

Like many worthwhile journeys, however, this one required a pause.

As I progressed through the officer line of my Blue Lodge and eventually prepared to serve as Worshipful Master, my priorities shifted from personal study to serving my brethren. Rather than rushing through the Academy, I chose to devote my time and energy to the responsibilities entrusted to me.

That decision reflected an important lesson in itself: sometimes leadership becomes the classroom.

Now that those responsibilities have been fulfilled, I look forward to returning to the Hauts Grades Academy and continuing the journey.

Level II will allow me to select nine Scottish Rite degrees for much deeper study, requiring research papers that explore their symbolism, practical application, and significance within Freemasonry. Level III culminates in an extensive original research project that contributes to the growing body of Masonic scholarship.

For me, the Hauts Grades Academy is more than an educational program. It is another opportunity to ask better questions, discover deeper connections, and continue the lifelong pursuit of Masonic light.
